Who Is Serving Traditional Pub Grub In North Cornwall?

Updated: Dec 11, 2023

When you are feeling peckish and fancy something not too formal, why not try simple traditional pub grub. The area of North Cornwall and Devon is peppered with great options for eating out, from simple pub food, beach bars to bistros and first-class fine dining.

We have put together a list of six traditional pubs and Inns serving wholesome fare and local produce, families, children, and four-legged friends’ welcome.

Booking in advance is advisable in peak season and school holidays.

The Rising Sun, Altarnun

Seven minutes’ drive from The Granary, and one of our favourites, will bring you to the door of a 16th Century Inn a couple of miles from Altarnun. The Rising Sun is a great single-room pub with slate floors and an old oak bar worn smooth by years of resting elbows. Known locally for excellent food served in the bar or restaurant, there is an excellent selection of real ales, mouth-watering food, and a friendly atmosphere. Dogs are welcome in the bar and the snug if you are eating. Book in advance for Sunday lunch!

The Cornish Arms, Padstow

It could be the blueprint for how a good country inn should be. Go for the exceptional Sunday lunch and the atmosphere - it's unpretentious and authentic, with locals rubbing shoulders with walkers and holiday makers. The food, as expected when Rick Stein is involved, does not miss a beat. We are not talking gastropub or fine dining, but good honest dishes cooked well – scampi in the basket, rump steak and chips, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. The merry bar is where the locals down pints of Tribute – the pub is owned by the St Austell Brewery. There is a wood-burner for winter evenings and a big garden for sunny days.

Cobweb Inn, Boscastle

Set in the heart of stunning Boscastle, this family friendly pub serves home-made food and Cornish ales. The bar has open fires to keep you warm in winter and outside seating for relaxed dining during the summer. Dogs are welcome. Serving as an off-licence from the 1700’s. The Cobweb Inn bottled its own beer, wine and spirits and was under the charge of the Customs. Once unloaded from the ships and then sorted into different alcoholic strength and customs approval, before being sold to the inns and pubs of Boscastle and surrounding areas.

The Port William Inn, Trebarwith Strand

Trebarwith Strand is a surfer’s paradise that draws locals and visitors from everywhere to its spectacular waves and golden sands throughout the year. The Port William boasts captivating views over Trebarwith Strand, near Tintagel. This scenic pub and restaurant is a must for al fresco dining, delicious food, and award-winning beers. Designed to display the best of the local produce available in the region, their menu combines seasonal specials, delicious desserts, and firm favourites. On cooler evenings, get cosy, beside the log fire or dine outside to take in the views. A wonderful place to dine near Tintagel on Cornwalls dramatic North coast.

The St Kew Inn, St Kew

The St Kew Inn nestles in the beautiful Parish of St Kew and offers everything expected of a traditional village pub. The tranquil location is the perfect setting to enjoy a glass of wine from extensive cellars or a pint of beer drawn from casks available during the season. Built in the 15th Century the Inn retains original features including a glorious open fireplace where the logs crackle during chilly winter days to add atmosphere and a warm welcome to the hardy walker. The St Kew Inn prides itself on the choice and quality of food all prepared in its renowned kitchens. A superb selection of delicious dishes are eaten in one of the Inns four dining areas. The charming well-maintained gardens provide yet another area in which to dine during fine weather and are particularly suitable for family outings.

The Mariners, Rock

Paul and Emma Ainsworth relaunched The Mariners pub in Rock, Cornwall in May 2019. The 130-cover local, which looks over Cornwall’s Camel Estuary, is open with a new menu and interiors to match. The Mariners is open Monday to Sunday offering an all-day menu. The menus, designed by Paul and Joe Rozier focus on British classics while championing the best of local produce. A warm welcome awaits you.
